Cast Iron Pan contaminated or not?

posted 33 months ago by nyjessi

Hello

My husband fryed gluten containing fish in our cast iron skillet....if I use this for gluten-free items will it cross cotaminate?  I know that the surface is porous and seems to soak in the oil.

Do you think it is ok or do I need to not use it?

Thanks

Jessica

Hmmm, that's a tricky one. If it were nonstick I would say you definitely need a new one... I guess I would say that cast iron skillets aren't very expensive and you might as well get a dedicated gluten-free one so you never have to worry about it.

Cast Iron is VERY EXPENSIVE!! It is much more expensive than non-stick.  Right now I am not using it....wish I knew if it was ok or not;-(

We can not afford to buy another one....it was a wedding present.  THis is part of a set from Dr. Mercola....very good pans!

Hi Jessica, cast iron is definately porous. I wouldn't use it unless it was completely resurfaced, then re-season. Do you know anyone with a machine shop?

I believe that stainless steel would be safe to share, as long as it was cleaned well, of course.
